Many people have seen the white, oval decals on vehicles displaying letters that represent the places people love. The places where they vacation, where they go for recreation or relaxation; where they are inspired by beauty or comforted by gathering with family or friends; where they make their fondest memories and yearn for those in their future. In the bigger-picture manner of thinking, I can say that planet EARTH is my favorite place in all the universe. Granted, I’ve never been anywhere else except in a couple of wildly interesting dreams, but I don’t believe I could get anyone to disagree that this planet is a marvel of beauty and nourishment. Only a few have seen Earth from space, but what they have to say is “profound and humbling.” The following quote and others are from an article in The Atlantic, April 2012, The Whole World: The Power of Seeing the Earth From Space. “The first day or so we all pointed to our countries. The third or fourth day we were pointing to our continents. By the fifth day, we were aware of only one Earth.” a former Royal Saudi Air Force pilot who flew aboard the STS-51-G Space Shuttle mission in 1985.
It just might be that the human experience on planet Earth is the equivalent of the most amazing getaway possible to the most exquisite planet in the universe. Who knows from where we came and to where this journey will take us, but I think I’ll enjoy thinking of the present moments, humanity’s time here on Earth, as the Grand Vacation Sweepstakes we won long ago. |
